Nita

Nita is an Egyptian Oriental dancer. Her passion for classic Egyptian dance has taken her from one end of Canada to the other and into the United States, performing, teaching, studying and sharing her delight with audiences and students alike. In addition to the dances of Egypt, Nita also has a deep interest in the many other dance forms of the Near/Middle East and North Africa.

Believing that one is never finished learning, Nita continues her on-going studies by  traveling each year to study with master dancers & instructors at workshops across North America. Her major influences and role models are Yasmina Ramzy and the instructors at Arabesque Academy, Hadia, Denise Enan, Saqra and Morocco. And of course her early teachers must be acknowledged because without them she would not have begun the journey : Joan (her mother), Diane Edrington (Kedijah) and Lana Dowie.

As an entertainer, Nita is an expressive and creative artist who easily connects with the audience and shares her heart in the celebratory spirit that is Oriental dance. As a teacher, Nita  is encouraging and nurturing, focusing on building a strong foundational movement vocabulary upon which her students can learn and grow. She is proud to watch as her students advance and develop into beautiful, accomplished dancers in their own right.

Nita strongly believes in promoting and celebrating cultural diversity in the effort towards building bridges to peace and understanding. As a reaction to 9/11, she named her school Celebrations Bellydance as a statement of personal commitment of promoting and celebrating diversity in her own community, and in celebrating her life and the lives of each of us in the larger world.

Nita has been the proud recipient of the Cultural Industry Training Trust Fund (2003 & 2005) and of the Advanced Artist Award (2007). She has attended Arabesque Academy's 2-week Professional Development course with Yasmina Ramzy in Toronto (2003 & 2007) and has completed Hadia's Professional Teacher Training program (level 3). She was the featured dancer in the Summer 2003 issue of MidBits magazine, and has had articles published in MidBits, Sahda, and Zaghareet magazines. She maintains an informative website for students, teaches weekly classes, performs professionally and is the artistic director for her dance company, Saba. Nita is also an event organizer and show producer, bringing internationally known master instructors to Whitehorse for  workshops and producing major Middle Eastern dance shows on the theatre stage.

Nita's dance resume is available on request.
